Have bananas always been so easy to peel?

Or perhaps could they have been genetically steered by humanity to become easier to work with? I mean, really, they do seem awfully convenient! Could the banana fruit have been, in the past, encased in a peel what was not so easy to remove? How might this astonishingly convenient delicacy have come about naturally?
